Dropping In
by John Atkinson

This article was first published in the September 2007 issue of Vermont Sports

A bunch of years ago, I wrote a TrailHeads column about making the transformation to a full-suspension mountain bike and the newfound joy in motion it produced. Well, since that time, I've gone for more suspension on my x-c bike, and I've been craving even more. So finally this year, I got my first free-ride/downhill bike.

At each progressive step, the fun factor has gone to a new level, as has my love affair with biking. After 33 years of riding bikes, you'd think I'd have plumbed the depths of the sport, but it just keeps developing new tricks. And that fresh big travel steed allows me to do new tricks too, like railing berms, wheelie-dropping more than a foot or two and hitting bigger jumps.

Vermont Mountain Bike Advocates is a non-profit organization that promotes trail advocacy through volunteer participation in planning, funding, establishing and maintaining trails throughout Vermont. VMBA educates mountain bikers to be responsible, environmentally sensible trail users.

Sleepy Hollow Ski and Bike Center  We offer over 10 miles of single track in Huntington, VT., plus 20 miles of ski trails to ride on! Come for the challenge, come for the fun, and bring a towel for a jump in our pond afterwards.

Kingdom Trails  Formed in 1994, the Kingdom Trails Association was created to protect, develop, and promote this incredible trail network. To date, Kingdom Trails has mapped and signed over 75 miles of multi-use trails, allowing for many self-guided hiking, mountain biking, and riding opportunities, with many more to come.

The Millstone Hill Touring Center  Over 20 miles of challenging single track Mountain bike trails already ranked one of Vermont's Five Best Mountain Bike Networks.

White River Valley Trails Association We've got 265 miles of trail, all mapped for exploring and open to the public. Our link takes you to the Chamber of Commerce in Randolph.

Moosalamoo National Recreation Area

Competitive riders and casual bikers take full advantage of our legendary dirt roads, our still-accessible logging and carriage roads and the miles of antiquated railroad beds that criss-cross the region.

Stratton Trails is a non profit organization dedicated to creating and implementing a mountain biking trail system in and around Stratton, Vermont.

We provide guided hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and snowshoeing adventures in Vermont.  We share our passion for the Green Mountain State during multi-day, guided inn-based hiking, bicycling, snowshoeing and cross country trips. Some of our trips are van supported, providing you with the opportunity to get to the next inn under your own steam, knowing that your suitcase will be waiting for you in your room at the end of the day.  On other trips we use vans to transport guests from point to point, followed by day hikes while based in one or more of Vermont's many charming inns.  Either way, you'll have great great food, awesome scenery and exercise, and you will be able to experience the beauty of Vermont at a pace that enables you to savor it.   Each step of the way is filled with history, which we’ll share with you, along with verses from our dog-eared copy of Robert Frost’s poetry.  We also provide guided day trips, and cross country skiing lessons. In her spare time, Deborah Lewis also teaches cross country skiing to school kids at Rikert Ski Touring Center.
